This is a popular dreamtime story of seven ladies being chased through the desert by one man. there are numerous scenarios as these ladies travel around. Eventually they rise up into the sky and form the Pedaides, a group of seven stars seen in the southern skies. There are many variations of this story.

For this latest array of stunning etchings from Maningrida Arts & Culture, the arts coordinators and printmaker Jean Kohen drove to the remote outstations which surround the art centre taking with them all the materials, equipment and copper plates.
A true connection with country is achieved as the etchings are produced totally on location on the artists own land.

An edition of 20 for each etching was produced.

Dennis Nona

This work included in the 5th Asia–Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) at Queensland Art Gallery.

DennisNona is one of only a handful of artists chosen to represent Australia at the APT.

The main two printmaking techniques used by Dennis Nona are linocut
printing and etching.

Linocut printing is a technique where an artist carves into a block of lino,
which has a rubbery texture. This block is then inked and put through a
printing press, transferring the image to a sheet of paper.

Etching is a process where an artist works on a specially prepared metal
sheet. Chemicals and acids are used to etch the image into the metal. This
sheet is then run through a printing press to transfer the image to paper.

Dennis Nona has compared the process and the results of linocut printing
to traditional woodcarving, and that of etching to shell carving.
