James Iyuna

2006 Telstra Bark Painting finalist

James has depicted a billabong at a site called Dilebang. Dilebang is regarded as one of the most dangerous and sacred of sites in the Kun-Kurulk clan estate. Travel in the area is undertaken with caution as site custodians are aware of the ancestral power of the area. The billabong at Dilebang is near escarpment country rich in rock art and with a high concentration of sacred site.

Hunting is still very much a life style for the Yolnu living on their homelands. For tholse at Djarrakpi the hunting for turtle provides a robust source of food. during the right season when the winds have died, calm waters prevail and turtle surfacing to breathe can be easily spotted from great distances by the trained eyes of the hunter. the chase in then on often taking the hunting party far off the coast. As with their ancestors, the present day hunters pay homage and take direction from the Wanupini, the great cumulo nimbus clouds that rise on the horizons. These clouds also connect the clans estates on land to those over sea country, connected by the sacred string and harpoon from the first hunters. On looking back from out to sea the hunters will see the same cloud formations over their country at Djarrakpi.
This painting depicts the sacred Wanupini either send of the bark, one out to the furthest extend of Mangalili country, the other over Djarrakpi.
